Setting your sights

Scattered jigsaw pieces

What are you setting your sights on?

The turn of the year is a reminder that prompts some to make a New Year resolution.

Maybe there’s a bad habit to overcome, or a good habit to develop.

Maybe there is something big that was put off last year.

When we make a resolution, we often have a very partial picture.

We may see the pieces but not how they really fit together.

Look carefully at the pieces

It’s a holiday tradition in our family to have a jigsaw puzzle out.

Once the edges are joined up it’s an invitation for anyone to put in a piece!

Some people get completely absorbed in the hunt, the challenge to make sense of it all.

(Spot the piece the dog chewed).

Drifting or navigating?

In our own lives we may have a very partial picture of how our own pieces belong.

We might feel uncomfortably adrift at times.

In ancient times navigation relied on the relationship of the sun stars and planets to the horizon.

Mariners took these bearings for ‘setting their sights’ - to work out where they were and crucially, where they were going.

Trusting for the journey

When you set your sights on something, the distractions of your immediate surroundings seem less important.

Rather than setting our sights by the sun or other star, a most enlivening journey means setting your sights beyond.

For me, this means setting my sights on the one who truly knows me and loves me. The one who is beyond and within this world - then trusting for the journey.

How will you navigate this new year?
